We spoke with Beforeland cultivators Filip Moskwa and Joshua Prior about what got them to where they are today.

What are your titles?

Filip Moskwa: We have this philosophy where we don’t like using titles. You know the whole “there’s no I in team”. That’s us! We are all cultivators, laborers, janitors, salesmen, marketers, maintenance guys, etc. We all have our hands in this thing, and it takes all of us to make it happen. If someone has to work, has something going on, or takes a vacation, we know someone else is right there to have our back.

Where did the two of you grow up?

Filip Moskwa: I grew up in Camillus, New York.

Joshua Prior: I was born and raised in Phoenix, New York.

What, who, or why were you inspired to cultivate cannabis?

Filip Moskwa: I went to school for Biology and honestly never used my degree. Later in life, I was offered an opportunity to grow out of state. From there, I fell in love with maintaining plant life and was able to incorporate my education. While maintaining plants, I sometimes think about the scene from The Karate Kid where Mr. Miyagi prunes his bonsai trees. I “grew up” out of state, I made mistakes and learned that growing cannabis is simple, but technique and understanding strain-specific environments is critical.

Joshua Prior: Growing up, this was a small dairy farm that my Dad ran. After he passed away, the farm had to shift to a crop farm, so we could keep it in the family. Growing up around all this, it was evident that money was always tight. Equipment was never able to be kept up, and things had to be done in a certain way because of what was available. My Dad loved this farm. It was his entire life. As I grew older, I wanted to find a way to keep the farm my Dad loved in the family. I knew I had to change to allow me to do this successfully.

How long have you been a cannabis cultivator?

Filip Moskwa: Five years.

Joshua Prior: Beforeland started with hemp cultivation in 2020 and has been growing cannabis for a year now.

What is unique about Berforeland Farms’ cultivation method?

Filip Moskwa: Our cultivation method is simply “Less is More.” Understand your nutrients and feed. Plants will then rage.

Joshua Prior: We really want to let the plant shine because it has grown for hundreds of years on its own, so we don’t want to mess with what nature has perfected. We do still pay close attention to detail during the different growing stages to help the plants in whatever ways we can to help them have the best potential in our greenhouse setting.

You can find both Unicorn Poop and Girl Crush from Beforeland Farms at Upstate Canna Co. in Schenectady and at Flynnstoned in Syracuse
